It is not at all difficult to see that progress in Turkish musical education and development according to world standards is an attainable goal, as is the agreement between musical notation and methodology. Through the use of an international approach and accepted world music literature, we can easily achieve technical development in this area. Beyond methods written for their own instruments, many performers may borrow from and adapt exercises written for other instruments to create their own, ignoring technical terms, string and finger numbers, the right- and left-hand rule on kanun, down- and upstrokes on picked instruments, up- and downbows on bowed instruments, PIMA on guitar, etc. The exercises in this book, though not completely playable on instruments other than the oud, can still be thought of as guideposts of a sort, and applied to performance. In these exercises, technical improvement takes precedence over musical development. With the hope that more high-quality Turkish music and instrument methods will become available.
