The Playful Notebooks - Ancient Theatre
Drama has its roots in the Dionysia, a festival that took place annually, in ancient Athens, to honor the god Dionysus. During this celebration, in the year 441 BCE, Sophocles’ biting and deeply political play “Antigone” was staged. It brought into sharp contrast a clash of worldviews – the authoritarianism expressed by Creon, who forbids the burial of Antigone’s brother and demands obedience to his sovereignty, and Antigone’s ultimate defiance, impelled by a sacred sense of obligation and sisterly love, that she pays for with her very life.
