Folk songs of Skyros, Greece
JOINT PUBLICATION WITH THE PELOPONNESIAN FOLKLORE FOUNDATION AND THE RESEARCH CENTER FOR GREEK FOLKLORE OF THE ACADEMY OF ATHENS
In this publication, Sotiris Tsianis attempts to cover the musical tradition of Skyros, studying and presenting 168 musical examples. This rare and valuable material is approached in a multifaceted manner, as required by modern ethnomusicological research. The folklore comments and the extensive musical introductory note are a valuable aid in better understanding the structure of traditional music, and how it is expressed by folk songs. In addition, the full poetic text and the transcription of its melody into music (staff) are given for each song, while the four CDs that accompany the publication contain the musical material of these examples. The publication is addressed both to lovers of traditional music and to researchers and scholars, who now have at their disposal scientifically processed material that covers the island of Skyros musically in full. This, of course, does not mean that the importance of this study is limited to the narrow limits of Skyros, but it undoubtedly constitutes a contribution to ethnomusicological research in Greece in general.
