"The phrase “Fire, Woman and the Sea” is attributed to the comic poet Menander. It enshrines a widespread perception of his time regarding the “elements” that had the power to disrupt, threaten or overthrow the status quo. As fire scorches and seas foam, so woman, according to this admittedly depreciable view, unleashes a “dangerous” power, an unchartable energy that can’t be harnessed. This saying expressed a deep fear of women who, confined by their contemporary patriarchal framework, were often treated with mistrust, portrayed as objects of temptation and a considered a threat to male dominance.
Yet today the same phrase can be read as an ode to women whose resilience and strength is comparable to these powerful forces of nature. Women, like fire and the sea, can be dangerous to those who underestimate them or try to contain them. As the sea is both nurturing and unbridled, as fire both warms and transforms, so women are multidimensional, independent and creative..."
