Spata - Customs, rituals, celebrations, mucis and songs
The Series "Sources on Greek Folk Culture" was started by Dr Aikaterini Polymerou-Kamilaki, former Director of the Hellenic Folklore Research Centre of the Academy of Athens. Its purpose was to offer in academic form unpublished folklore material stored in the Centre's archives and collections, in collaboration with local government agencies and cultural associations. Since its inception two decades ago, it has aroused great interest and produced many publications. Since 2002, when the first volume in the series, "Folklore Miscellanea from the Island of Paxos", by Dimitrios Loukatos. was published, 15 titles in 16 volumes and 34 CDs and DVDs' have been produced, the costs of publication being borne by the parties concerned. Other extensive volumes are in preparation, while the possibility of publishing further works is constantly under review and depends upon requests by local agencies and upon the scheduling by the Centre of upcoming projects. The creation and the instituting of the series "Sources on Creek Folk Culture" was occasioned by the frequent and persistent requests from folklore and cultural associations, and Local Administration agencies, that unpublished folklore material concerning various localities held in the Archive of the Centre should be used and published. After the various demands had been carefully considered and the possibilities of funding by various interested parties been explored, with a view to publishing the material, Dr Polymerou-Kamilaki suggested to the Supervisory Committee of the Centre that a new series be created entitled Sources on Greek Folk Culture.
