Light on North Indian Raga, Tala & Improvisation with Hania Luthufi

At 12:00 Friday August 7

In this course we will begin by learning the parental scales from which North Indian classical ragas are derived, and learn the simple system that this music is notated in.

We will then study various Raga compositions and see how they set themselves to various Talas in the classical raga system. We will observe and study the form of a raga presentation from how it begins to how it ends, and learn how improvisation enters the framework. Towards the end of our seminar, if time permits, we will attempt to compose and look at each others’ compositions.

US$ 120 for 15 hours of instruction (5 classes x 3 hours). Registration includes access to video recordings of all classes.
