International Piano Competition”De Bach au Jazz” 11-14 April 2018

The International Piano Competition “De Bach Au Jazz”  will take place at the “Athens Conservatory” (17-19 Leoforos Vasileios Georgiou B’ & Rigillis) from 11 to 14 April, 2018.The specificity of this competition consists in the breadth of musical expression covered: classical, contemporary music and jazz. There are 6 separate groups (6 to 30 years old) according to the age of the candidates. The jury is composed of artists of international renown.

The first edition of this competition, held in Paris, France, in 2013 at the Schola Cantorum, was particularly successful: 115 candidates from 23 countries, very high musical standards with laureates from various countries. Program of the Competition

Group A – 8 years and under
• Two pieces of different style (max. total time 5 mn)

Group B – 11 years and under 
• One piece from J.S. Bach (or of baroque style)
• One etude
• One piece – free choice
(max. total time 7 mn)

• One piece from J.S. Bach (or of baroque style)
• One etude
• One romantic piece
• One piece – free choice
(max. total time 12 mn)

Group D – 17 years and under

First round
• One piece from J.S. Bach
• One etude
• One quick movement from a classical sonata (Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven)
(max. total time 10mn)

Second round
• One romantic piece
• One jazz piece: a Scott Joplin’s ragtime, or an improvisation in jazz style,
or one 20th century, or one contemporary piece
(max. total time 15 mn)

Group E – 21 years and under

First round
• One prelude and fugue from J.S. Bach
• One etude (Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Debussy)
(max. total time 10 mn)

Second round
• One quick movement from a classical sonata (Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven)
• One romantic piece
• One jazz piece: Nikolaï Kapustin – Toccatina Op. 36, or an improvisation in jazz style,
or one 20th century, or one contemporary piece
(max.total time 25 mn)

Group F – 30 years and under

First round
• One prelude and fugue from J.S. Bach
• One etude (Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Debussy, Prokofiev, Ligeti)
• One romantic piece
(max.total time 20 mn)

Second round
• One classical sonata (Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven)
• One piece – free choice
• One jazz piece: Nikolaï Kapustin – Etude Op. 40, N°1, or an improvisation in jazz style,
or Roger Briggs – “Jitterbug” (score) or one 20th century or one contemporary piece
(max.total time 40 mn)
