Learning styles and learning strategies: Things to watch out for in the informal music class

In this seminar I will ask students to listen carefully to audio recordings of children and teenagers engaged in learning to play music by ear. We will hear some things going on which might give us pause for thought. We will consider how different children approach learning when they are using their ears rather than their eyes. A distinction between learning styles and learning strategies will be outlined, and we will think about the implications of the many different approaches to learning that children spontaneously adopt. What does it all mean and what are the causes? Finally, what can we teachers learn from listening carefully to our students’ products?

Lucy Green is Professor Emerita of Music Education. Her research interests are in the sociology of music education, specializing in meaning, ideology, gender, popular music, inclusion, equality, informal learning, innovative pedagogies, and the lives and learning of visually impaired musicians. Lucy led the research and development project Informal Learning in the Music Classroom within the British movement Musical Futures (www.musicalfutures.org) and this work is now being implemented in schools across the UK and in Australia, Canada, Singapore, and parts of the USA, Brazil, Cyprus and other countries. Her more recent research took that work forward into instrumental tuition http://earplaying.ioe.ac.uk. She has written six books and edited two books on music education.

Teaching/learning strategies and practical activities for fostering collaborative creative learning in Elemental Music Education

Creativity and group learning can often be complex, messy and unpredictable and can represent a challenge for the teacher who wants to plan for them. In this presentation, based on my own teaching experience and research, I illustrate a possible “pedagogy of creative group work” as applied to Elemental Music Education. Starting from a sample of elemental improvisation/composition practice, I introduce the major steps of the group creative process, from the preparatory and the modeling phases, through the small group work phase, up to the presentation of the outcomes, reflection and feedback. The aim is to provide an outline of relevant pedagogical strategies in planning, implementing and evaluating collaborative creative activity in music and movement/dance.

Andrea Sangiorgio is Professor of Elemental Music Education at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich, Germany. He studied piano and musicology in Italy, he completed Orff-Schulwerk studies at the Orff Institute, University Mozarteum Salzburg, Austria. He holds a PhD from the University of Exeter, UK on children’s creative interactions in group work. He is an active music teacher educator internationally, focusing on the themes: elemental music and movement education, group improvisation and musical creativity, cognitive aspects of music learning.
