In this seminar Evgenios Voulgaris will present and unfold the way in which musical traditions based on the Makam system are interpreted by the yaylı tanbur, in the context of its role in these traditions. 
As examples of this, specific compositions will be used. There will also be a presentation of the concept of makam as well as demonstrations of its use within the context of utility in melodic interpretation either of instrumental compositions or of songs, as well as its use in the improvisational taksim form.

The seminar is open to all who wish to approach the interpretive aspect of the yaylıtanbur regardless of which instrument they play. There will also of course be time set aside for participants who play yaylı tanbur dedicated to the relevant issues and essential issues of technique for the instrument.

Necessary level for the participation:

• Medium knowledge level
• Basic knowledge level of modal systems 
• Knowledge of Music writing 
• Instrument with microtonal ability

Evgenios Voulgaris started his music training in 1985 studying Byzantine music. His interest in traditional music started in 1992 and took the form of apprenticeship next to Christos Tsiamoulis. A multi-instrumentalist himself, he has repeatedly teamed with master musicians and composers such as Ross Daly, Christos Tsiamoulis, Nikos Kipurgos, Dimitris Papadimitriou, Notis Marvudis in concerts, recordings and television productions in Greece and abroad.
